Engineering Industry Specialist at LaGuardia Community College

Talia Barzel is the Careers in Engineering (CIE) Industry Specialist for LaGuardia Community College’s Math, Engineering and Computer Science department. Through the CUNY Inclusive Economy initiative, she builds employer partnerships to create strong career pathways for LaGuardia’s future engineers. Talia joined LaGuardia Community College in 2023 with the launch of the CIE program, bringing 8 years of experience in workforce development at NYC organizations and more than a decade of focus on economic mobility for all. She believes that industry-targeted training and access are the keys to career success. Prior to LaGuardia, Talia was the Assistant Director for New York Programs at Seedco and the Supervisor of Training at The Door – A Center for Alternatives. She received a Master of Social Work with specializations in social enterprise administration and the “world of work” from Columbia University.

Dr. Yves Ngabonziza is a Professor of Engineering and the Director of the Engineering Program in the Math, Engineering, and Computer Science Department at LaGuardia Community College. He holds a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the City University of New York. He has published numerous papers in the field of solid mechanics and engineering education and has given talks at various major national and international conferences. Dr. Ngabonziza research interests include engineering education, composite materials simulation, electrical and mechanical behaviors of nanomaterials, nano-/micro-mechanics, and self-sensing of damage in carbon fiber reinforced structures and systems. Dr. Ngabonziza is also passionate about finding opportunities to provide students with industry-aligned career preparation.
