The Interborough Express is a transformative rapid transit project aiming to connect underserved areas of Brooklyn and Queens. Directed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in January 2022, it's now in the pre-planning stages. The project will utilize existing rail lines, offering a new transit option for around 900,000 residents and 260,000 workers along its route. Anticipated to connect with multiple subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road, it's estimated to reduce travel times, alleviate congestion, and expand economic opportunities.

The chosen light rail mode, after extensive planning and public engagement, is expected to provide efficient service at good value. The formal environmental review process is set to commence in winter 2023. This project aims to bridge transportation gaps, offering faster and more direct public transit options, particularly benefiting underserved communities.
