Queens Chamber Healthcare & Wellness Committee Presents:

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically highlighted long-standing disparities in healthcare that disproportionately affect low-income communities and communities of color.

Join the Queens Chamber of Commerce on May 17th for a discussion about this issue with a panel of experts from NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, who will discuss the mental and physical health challenges faced by these populations, and how we can work together to close gaps in access to care.

Dr. Marlon E. Brewer is a Liberian born immigrant and a product of the New York City Public School System. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences from The State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1980, where he was recognized with the First Annual Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service to the University Community. He was admitted to the European-American Medical Exchange Program and studied Medicine at the Universidad de Extremadura Facultad de Medicina in Badajoz, Spain from 1980-1986.

His post-doctoral training was done in the Primary Care-Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine-Elmhurst Hospital. He served as Primary Care Chief Resident in his senior year. As a Junior Attending Physician Dr. Brewer was elected, Vice-President of the Attending Physician’s Association and was a member of the team negotiating the physician’s collective bargaining agreement with the Mount Sinai Medical School Affiliate.

Dr. Brewer is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He has been the Chief Physician of the Medical Primary Care Clinic since 1997 and Associate Director of the Department of Ambulatory Care at Elmhurst Hospital since 2003.

He also holds the faculty title of Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where he serves on the Interview & Admissions Committee. Dr. Brewer is a Core Faculty Member of the Internal Medicine Residency Program as well as a member of the program’s Admissions, Clinical Competency and Curriculum Committees. He is a member of hospital wide committees dealing with the quality of care, regulatory compliance, and improving the patient experience.

Dr. Deep Lohia is double-board certified psychiatrist, specializing in Child, Adolescent and Adult psychiatry, and has been practicing for over 12 years. Dr. Lohia received his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India, and proceeded to do a 3-year residency in Psychiatry at the same institute, before moving to NYC for career advancement.

He did another residency in Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Medical Center-Elmhurst Hospital, and a fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at Long Island Jewish Medical Center-Albert Einstein College of Medicine Program. After completing his training, he joined as an Attending Psychiatrist at NYC Health+Hospitals/Elmhurst in 2010, working in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), and is currently holding the position of Interim Director of CPEP.

Dr. Lohia has been actively involved in not only patient care, but student education as well, supervising and training medical students from St. George’s University (Grenada) and psychiatry residents from Mt Sinai Services at Elmhurst, being an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He has also authored several papers which have been published in reputable international journals.

Dr. Lohia’s clinical interests have involved providing psychiatric evaluations, medication management and crisis stabilization across various age groups, ethnicities, racial minorities and underprivileged populations.

Dr. Maru is an Assistant Professor in the Departments Global Health and Health Systems Design and Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Maru is an attending physician at H+H/Elmhurst Hospital where she practices as a generalist ObGyn. She is the faculty lead for the Arnhold Institute for Global Health NYC partnership with H+H/Elmhurst and Queens Hospitals.

In this partnership, she fosters collaboration in global and community health, in the areas of research, education, and care improvement, to improve the health and well-being of the communities served in the public system in Queens. Additionally, Dr. Maru is an advisor for the organization Possible, supporting health systems strengthening and implementation science work in rural Nepal. Her research is focused on improving healthcare access and quality for women and families in NYC and in rural South Asia.
